The Emergency Department Ward provides care for Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care and Minor Injuries.

Meal times
Hot meals are not provided.

If patients are able, they can leave the department to go to the WRVS shop, as well as the canteen and Starbucks coffee shop on the first floor. Vending machines can also be found on the ground floor main corridor. It is not advised that patients are away from the department for long periods as this may cause delays to their care. For those who are unable to safely access the shop sandwiches may be provided.

We may provide food and drink to patients who have been in the department for a prolonged period of time and would always assess the individual requirements of our patients e.g. diabetic etc.

No specific visiting hours.

Patients can be accompanied by one visitor maximum if needed.

 

How long will it take to walk to this ward
The time it will take to walk to this ward from the following entrance and nearest car park.  This is based on on the average person walking at a moderate pace in the most direct route and using the stairs where applicable.

Please note: There is no access to the Emergency Department from within the main hospital.  The Emergency Department has a dedicated reception next to the right of the main hospital main entrance.

What can or should I bring to the ward? (patients) Regular medication
What can or should I NOT bring to the ward? (patients) An overnight bag may not necessarily be required as only a small number of patients are admitted.  However, it is at the patient's discretion if they wish to bring one as there may be a possibility for admission. 

Patients are advised not to bring large amounts of money or valuables. There will be nowhere for items to be securely locked away whilst patients attend x-ray or scans and therefore brought at the patients own risk.

What visitors cannot bring to the ward? Alcohol is not permitted in the department at any time and may be confiscated.

 

Discharging a patient
Once a patient has been discharged it is the patients’ responsibility to arrange their own transport home.

If they cannot be collected by a family member or friend there is a taxi telephone box at the Emergency Department reception and the hospital main entrance. In exceptional circumstances transport may be arranged for the patient providing they meet specific criteria.
